This massive machine is a G. Patton Super SUV, a Chinese American beast based on the Ford F450 Super Duty. It looks like a tank, with a massive grille, ultra wide fenders, matte black ‘kevlar’ paint, and giant off-road tires.
The G. Patton name was originally used for the Chinese-market variant of the U.S. Specialty Vehicles (USSV) Rhino GX SUV. An import company in Tianjin had the rights to sell the Rhino GX in China.
At one moment in time there was a disagreement of some sort, and the Chinese side went their own way.
They set up a company called G. Patton, headquartered in Tianjin, with dealers in Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu. They started selling the Super SUV, which looks a lot like the Rhino GX, but they are not the same car. The arrangement of the side windows for example is notable different.
G. Patton China does not appear to have any links with USSV anymore. G. Patton still uses a USSV logo on their site, but makes no mention of the American company anywhere else.
The Chinese also added other vehicles to their lineup, likely of their own design. There is the 6×6 Tomahawk, based on the Jeep Wrangler. A 4×4 version of the Tomahawk goes by the name of Warhawk.
And they sell G-MAC, based on the Ford F-450, and looking like a clone of the infamous Dartz Prombrom. And finally there is the Warrior Sword, which appears to be exactly the same car as the USSV Rhino XT.
I have seen images of an assembly hall in Tianjin, where the black body of the Super SUV is draped over a stripped-down Ford F-450. So I guess that is what they do: they import Ford and Jeeps from the U.S., strip ‘m, put their own bodies on, and sell them on as G. Pattons.
I have emailed USSV and asked them about the situation, and whether they were involved in the G. Patton operation in Tianjin. I got a short and somewhat tense email back, saying only that: “USSV makes the Rhino GX and Rhino XT in the United States”. Understood!
Power comes from a 362 hp 6.8 liter V10 petrol engine, which is the same engine as USSV uses in the Rhino GX. Price of the G. Patton Super SUV starts at 3.58 million yuan.
Interestingly, G. Patton appears to be working on a new variant of the Super SUV, based on the Ford Raptor, and powered by the Raptor’s 450 hp 3.5 liter twin-turbo V6. That is going to a fun car…
Check this! All the way from Kentucky, changed into a G. Patton in China. And the Chinese do know who G. Patton was. They even have a quote of him on their site: “Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way.”
That’s a Ford interior, with a G. Patton badge on the wheel.
There are quite a lot of these Super SUVs on the road in Beijing. I see them almost regularly, so the Tianjin company must be doing good business.
Note the ‘Patton USSV’ logo in the spare wheel. Probably a left-over from the time companies still worked together.
