A white Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road in Beijing, looking every inch as giant as it is. The vehicle looked brand new, with super cool typical Toyota decals on the sides and license plates from Jilin Province.
Toyota does not officially sell the 4Runner in China but there is a lot of demand, and thus always a way. The parallel market (dealer to dealer) imports lots of 4Runners straight into China.
The vast majority of these cars comes from the Middle East, including this one. They are massively expansive. The TRD Off-Road version sells for around 635.000 yuan or $92.340!
The TRD Off-Road is a high-end trim level, equipped with lots of nice goodies and a serious off-road package: 4WD with Active Traction Control (A-Trac), Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), and Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control (CRAWL). That should take the 4Runner over the Great Wall, and beyond.
The interior looks like it was made out of strong stuff, but not exactly luxurious. The tiny screen is really a joke for 2020. The seat covers are after-market.
The Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road is powered by a 4.0 liter V6 engine with an output of 270 hp and 384 Nm. The not-too powerful motor is mated to a five-speed (!!!) automatic transmission.
If you want to go even slower; some Chinese sellers also offer a 2.7 liter four-cylinder engine with only 157 hp and 246 Nm. This engine is also mated to the 5-speed automatic.
It all sounds rather ancient and it is; the current fifth generation 4Runner has been in production since 2009. A new one isn’t on the horizon just yet.
No matter how old, these stripes remain cool.
It has a tow hook and an odd fog light under the bumper, likely fitted there to comply with Chinese regulations. You see these add-on lights on many parallel-import cars.
The 4Runner badge with a special font.
It looks a little angry…
