This is an ultra are Beijing Commercial Vehicle BJ2020M, a hard-top 4×4 off-road vehicle. The one we saw was fully loaded with dealer accessories. Including: a three-phase bull bar, flag poles, side bars, ultra shiny wheel covers, roof-mounted mirrors, and for spotlights on that same roof. A dream as much a car a dream can be.
The Beijing Commercial Vehicle BJ2020M was made by a great company called Beijing Commercial Vehicle Manufacturing Plant. They are almost entirely forgotten. But not today.
Like so many of these smaller Beijing-based car makers, Beijing Commercial Vehicle made cars based on the BAW Beijing BJ212. And also like so many, hey eventually ended up, alongside BAW, under the mighty umbrella of the car making colossus Beijing Auto Industry Corporation.
Beijing Commercial Vehicle did a good job making something very special. At the time, in the mid-1980’s, BAW didn’t make any hardtop cars itself. Beijing Commercial also redesigned the front and rear fenders, the rear lights, the entire back-door ensemble, and those crazy wheel covers.
I saw this BJ2020M on a very sunny summer’s day in the great year 2003, during a long journey by bicycle along the Second Ring Road in Beijing. The white color immediately stood out and I had to stop to take pictures. License plate is a very old 京E.
The full factory name: 北京商用汽车制造厂.
Power came from a 2.4 liter ‘Beijing’ 492 QA four-cylinder petrol engine, good for 70 hp and 160 Nm. Transmission was a four-speed manual, four-wheel drive.
Note the building mirroring in the windshield! A pretty coincidence. May this brilliant Beijing Commercial Vehicle BJ2020M prosper wherever it is today, a long 17 years after I met it in Beijing.
