A blue JMC Yuhu 7 pickup truck, seen in east Beijing in 2019. The Yuhu 7 is an impressive pickup with JMC’s signature ‘stormtrooper’ front, a design JMC uses on many of their pickups and vans. This particular example is painted in a nice shade of dark blue and fitted with gray alloys. Note the truck behind the Yuhu 7, that’s a JMC too!
The JMC Yuhu has very protruding wheel arches, giving the car a somewhat wild and racy look. The windows are darkened for extra coolness, and the only shiny parts are the door handles.
The JMC Yuhu 7 launched on the Chinese car market in 2017. It is a popular truck, I have seen quite a lot in Beijing, even as pickup trucks are forbidden to enter the city center due to environmental regulations. In Beijing, that is everything within the Fifth Ring Road, and I saw this blue one just outside the eastern section of the Fifth.
Pickup trucks are always classified as commercial vehicles in China, no matter if it is aimed at commercial or at consumer use. This means that even modern pickup trucks have to follow the same rules as a decades old tractor-trailer.
The interior has lots of black plastic but it looks quite car-like for its kind. There is a small screen in the center and a sporty set of dials.
Enough space for three on the rear bench.
Another legal requirement for commercial vehicles is that they have their license plate number in a large font on the rear, in addition to the plate itself. This makes some sense for overloaded semi-trucks but not much for a new pickup truck. But is looks kinda cool.
The JMC Yuhu 7 is powered by a 2.0 four-cylinder turbo diesel. Output is 141 hp and 350 Nm. Gearbox is a 6-speed manual sending horses to the rear wheels. The cargo bed size of the Yuhu 7 is 1475/1475/500mm. Price starts at 107.800 yuan, a good deal for a big pickup truck with stromtrooper looks.
JMC stands for Jiangling Motor Corporation. The characters write Jiangling Yuhu.
