A Hongqi HS5, seen in Beijing in 2019. The Hongqi HS5 is a premium SUV manufactured by China’s famous Hongqi brand, best known for their large state limousines. The Hongqi HS5 launched on the Chinese car market in 2019.
The Hongqi HS5 is a good looking vehicle, designed by Italdesign, with a typical Hongqi grille. Technically, it shares parts of its platform with the first generation Audi Q5 SUV, which was made in China by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture. FAW, or First Auto Works, is also the owner of the Hongqi brand.
The HS5 is made prettier with some interesting design details like these faux red-chrome air vents on the front fender.
The Hongqi HS5 is powered by a 2.0 turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. Output is 224 hp and 340 Nm, good for a 210 km/h top speed and a 0-100 in 8.2 seconds. Fuel consumption is 7.9 liters per 100 kilometer. Gear box is a six speed automatic. Base models get front wheel drive and top versions have four-wheel drive.

The interior is a very nice place to be, although this example is a tad too gray for my taste. The leather seats look very sporty, and are fitted with an extra neck pillow, which is very common in China. The screen has a diameter of 12.3 inch.
Somebody bought a white bag with plastic flowers!
The windows are tinted for privacy, this is standard from factory, and also very common here. The lights are large, especially compared to the tiny exhaust pipe tips.
The characters write Zhongguo Yiqi (中国一汽). Zhongguo means China and Yiqi is short for First Auto Works. Until the mid 2000’s most Chinese automakers had ‘中国’ in front of their brand names on their cars. Nowadays it is rares, but Hongqi continues the tradition.

Price for the Hongqi HS5 SUV starts at 183.800 yuan and ends at 249.800 yuan. That is quite steep for the segment and the Hongqi HS5 is not a very common car on the road, but compared to sales of the earlier Hongqi’s it is a massive success.
The hood ornament continues in the grille.
