First Generation Opel Astra 1.6 Sedan Is A German Rarity In China

Opel Astra 1.6 Sedan

An old Opel Astra sedan, seen on the streets of central Beijing in 2014. The good Astra was in a fine shape for its age, painted in a nice dark shade of green and fitted with the original wheel covers.

The first generation Opel Astra (F/T92) was manufactured from 1991 until 1998. It came in many kinds: 3-door hatchback, five-door hatchback, 2-door convertible, 5-door wagon, and a 4-door sedan like the one we have here. The Astra 1.6 was powered by a 1.6 liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 75 hp and 125 Nm. The engine was mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.

The first generation Opel Astra was not officially sold in China so it is very rare here. Earlier on I met a silver sedan. Official sales of the Astra, as an import, only started in 2005 with the third-generation Opel Astra H. Hopefully this old 1.6 is still somewhere around in China, but I fear it has long been scrapped.

  1. Took my drivers test in one of those. A non turbo diesel poverty spec sedan model to be specific. It was the first (and last) time I drove it actually. That thing was so slow my lead foot was overseen. Ha.
