A left-hand-drive Toyota Mark II was Seen in Hohhot, China in 2018. It’s not an American-imported Toyota Cressida but a original Japanese Mark II(X80). The car is now missing and the original plate is seen on a Mercedes-Benz GLS. I processed the plate.
Toyota Mark II was a RWD sedan sold from 1968 to 2004. Then its place was replaced by Toyota Mark X, which was called Toyota Reiz in China. Our Hohhot car was the 6th generation (X80), and it was a pre-facelift one. It seemed like the car was unloved. Even a disharmonious spraying could be found near the trunk.
The Mark II badge. The Mark II was the original Japanese version of the Cressida until 1992. After that, the Mark II was no longer available in the US market. Of course, the US version, known as MX83, was imported to China. But not much. The MX83 has a 7M-GE 3.0L engine. In the 1990s, some Japanese RHD cars were illegally imported from Japan and Hong Kong, then they will be converted to LHD. The owners or the sellers would get them legal. Some of them survived until today luckily. Our Hohhot car could be one of them.
Before this car, I had seen another Mark II. It was a post-facelift JZX80, only sold in Japan. It was sure that the car was imported in this way.
The Grande badge in the front of the car.
The car seemed abandoned. Then it disappeared. Its plate was seen on a Mercedes Benz in 2021. Maybe our Mark II was sold… there was no scrap yard in Hohhot.
Hope this old guy is well-treated now!
