A Totally Black Acura RL Sedan In China

Acura RL

A cool Acura RL sedan, seen in China in 2018. The RL looked great in black with darkened windows, black wheels, black mirrors, and black bumpers. Only the grille and some trim were spared from the blackness.

The door handles are black as well, making for a menacing look. The second generation Acura RL was an executive luxury car made from 2004 until 2012 with a facelift in 2009. Our black car is a facelifted model. The second generation Acura RL was based on the fourth generation Honda Legend.

The interior was luxurious with soft leather seats and classy wood trim around the gear lever and on the dashboard. It was equipped with a fancy CD sound system with a 6-CD changer and a small infotainment screen. The simple steering wheel looks out of place.

The Acura RL had an interesting drive train. All models had all-wheel drive, called “Super Handling-All Wheel Drive” (SH-AWD) by Acura. Power came from a big 3.7 liter V6 engine with an output of 307 hp and 370 Nm. The motor was mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox. It was a quick car, 0-100 took only 7.8 seconds and it had a 220 km/h top speed.

The Acura RL was officially sold in China as an import from 2006 until 2010. In that year, it was priced at a steep 860.000 yuan. Due to this high price the Acura RL remains a rarity on Chinese roads. At the time, the Acura brand wasn’t very well known in China, so not many consumers were willing to pay so much cash for an unknown import. Too bad, because the RL is a great looking car with a powerful engine and…

… the ultra cool SH-AWD badge.
