Opel Omega 2.0 GL Is A Pretty Red German Sedan In China

Opel Omega

Here we have an Opel Omega sedan, seen in 2013 in the Lido area in Beijing. The good Omega was in reasonable shape, painted in wine red with black mirrors, and fitted with sporty non-original multispoke wheels. There was some light damage at the front bumper, but nothing serious.

At the time, China was still Jetta country! The Volkswagen Jetta was one of the best-selling cars and the best-selling compact sedan. There were so many Jettas that one barely noted. In this photo are 3 first-generation FAW-VW Jetta’s, two originals, and one Jetta King.

The second generation Opel Omega B was manufactured from 1994 until 2004, with a facelift in 1999. The car that I saw is an original pre-facelift example. It was the successor of the Opel Omega A.

GL was the second-least expensive trim level (LS, GL, GLS, CD). The 2.0-liter petrol engine in this car had an output of 136 hp and 185 Nm, mated to a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic.

The Omega B was based on the GM V platform, which also underpinned the Holden Commodore and the Cadillac Catera. When it was launched it was a near-revolutionary vehicle with a super streamlined body and a lot of luxury for the money.

Check the lady with the stroller in the background! That’s my wife and first kid. They didn’t care about the rare Opel ): The Opel Omega was not officially sold in China, but some examples arrived via the gray market or diplomatic channels. Even in 2013, it was a super rare car. I don’t think any are still around today. Museum quality!
