Changan Ford Fiesta Was A Small Chinese-American Sedan

This is a Ford Fiesta sedan, seen in the Chinese capital Beijing in 2016. The Fiesta was parked near a government office building, a place where I often found older and unusual cars. The small Ford sedan was in good shape, painted in wine red with darkened windows and the original factory-standard wheel covers.

The Ford Fiesta sedan, based on the fourth-generation Fiesta series, was made in China by Changan-Ford. Production started in 2003 and ended in 2008. The car in the photos is the base model. Ford also sold a sportier S model with fancy wheels and a spoiler. Ford did not produce the Fiesta hatchback in China.

Interior

The interior was a tad dirty, but overall okay. The owner has added seat covers, rather cheap ones, a thick steering wheel cover, and a shiny after-market audio unit. The device atop the dashboard is an air freshener. It is a very early Fiesta, with the super cool old-school gear lever knob.

The rear compartment seems barely used. Even the seat covers are almost as new!

Engine and specifications

The only engine option was a 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol unit. The output was 92 hp (68 kW) and 130 Nm. It featured a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The top speed of the Fiesta sedan was 175 km/h and 0-100 took an easy 11.3 seconds. Size: 4153/1634/1435, 2486, with a 1040 kg curb weight. So light! Try that today with an EV. It had a 400-liter trunk space and a 45-liter fuel tank.

Characters on the right: 长安特, which is odd. A character is missing, but not one at the end. It should be: 长安特, Chángān Fútè, Changan Ford. The Chinese name for Fiesta is 嘉年华, Jiāniánhuá, and that means ‘Carnival’.

These old Fiesta badges were very pretty. The Ford Fiesta sedan was a popular car in the 2000s. It competed with cars like the FAW-Volkswagen Jetta and the Dongfeng-PSA Citroen ZX. In 2004, the base model cost 72.800 yuan.

The fourth-generation Ford Fiesta sedan was a common sight in China up until the late 2010s. Afterwards, these old Fords started to disappear from the roads. Nowadays, only a very few are still alive.
