The Sealion EV is part of BYD’s Ocean Series. ‘EV’ is part of the model name. There is a Sealion PHEV too, called the Sealion DM, but that’s a completely different car.
BYD markets the Sealion EV as a high-end sports SUV. It sure looks the business, with a low bonnet, wide wheel arches, a sloping roof line with a roof spoiler, and extra large alloy wheels with red brake calipers.
Interior
The style of BYD’s interiors is conservative compared to many other Chinese brands. BYD, for example, still holds on to the center-tunnel-based drive selector, whereas almost every other brand has moved it to the steering wheel column. The interior in the car on the photos looks a tad too dull, with gray seats and gray trim. Like a Volkswagen! The main screen, however, is a looker, with a 15.6-inch diameter. The driver’s display is 10.25-inch. Other equipment includes a 12-speaker Dynaudio audio system, two 50-watt wireless chargers, and two cup holders.
The rear compartment is spacious, look at that legroom. The BYD Sealion 07 EV is a large vehicle: 4830/1925/1620, 2930. It has a 558-liter trunk and a 58-liter frunk.
BYD offers various combinations of motors and batteries for the Sealion 07 EV. The car in the photos is the top spec ‘550 AWD Four-Wheel Drive Intelligent Navigation Version’. The last part of the name refers to the DiPilot ADAS, with 12 cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 5 millimeter wave radars. BYD recently unveiled a new and even more advanced variant of DiPilot, also known as God’s Eye.
Power and specs
The Chinese name: 海狮, Hǎishī, Sealion.
The BYD Sealiaon 07 EV 550 AWD Four-Wheel Drive Intelligent Navigation Version (the name is much shorter in Chinese: 比亚迪 海狮07 EV 550四驱智航版) has a dual-motor drive train. The combined output is 390 kW (530 hp) and 690 Nm. The top speed is 225 km/h, which is fast for an EV, and it does 0-100 in 4.2 seconds.
The rear looks ultra sporty, with another wing on the bootlid and diffuser-like aero in the bumper. The 550 model has an 80.64 kWh BYD Blade battery. The consumption is 16.7 kWh/100 km and CLTC range is, you guessed it, 550 kilometers. It has an 800V architecture, the max charging speed is 240 kW, and a fast-charge takes 25 minutes. That’s decent, but hardly groundbreaking. BYD’s Blade battery has never been known for quick charging, but BYD is working on new variants that will do better.
Price
As you see it here, this BYD costs 231.800 yuan or $31.8K. That’s a lot of car, and bang, for the buck. No wonder BYD does so well at the moment. It is the best-selling car brand in China. In 2024, the BYD brand sold a massive 3.524.482 cars. The Sealion 07 EV sells about 5250 units a month.
