BMW 1-Series Convertible Is A Rare German Cabriolet In China

A BMW 120i 1-Series Convertible, seen in Beijing in 2017. The open-top Bimmer was dusty, as all cars are in the capital, but otherwise okay, although the top seemed a bit loose at the back. It was painted in beige with a black top and gray wheels. Must be one of the most unassuming BMW cabriolets ever.

The first generation E88 BMW 1-Series Convertible was made from 2007 until 2014. In China, it was sold only for two years, in 2011 and 2012, and only in 120i spec. It didn’t sell well. Common wisdom says open cars are simply not popular here due to the air pollution, noise, and a lack of open-driving tradition. This wisdom is totally true. Even now, with much cleaner air in Beijing than in 2013, this hasn’t really changed.

Many car makers tried to sell convertible cars in China anyway and all of them failed. Only exception was Peugeot, which managed to sell quite a few of their funky 207 CC and 206 CC open-toppers. The BMW 120i Convertible was powered by 2.0 four with 152 hp and 200 Nm. In China, the only gearbox option was a 6-speed automatic. Power went to the rear wheels and top speed was a pretty speedy 212 km/h. BMW asked 368.000 yuan for the tiny convertible, which was a large pile of cash.

A Wondrous White BMW 5 Series Of The Cameroon Embassy In Beijing

A wondrous white E34 BMW 5-series sedan, seen parked in the Sanlitun embassy district in central Beijing in 2013. The good Bimmer was in a fine shape, with a clean body but in need of a little love and maintenance.

E12 BMW 520i Looks Very Cool In Black In Beijing

E12 BMW 520i

A brilliant first generation E12 BMW 520i, seen on a car market in Beijing in the winter of 2019. It is only the second E12 I ever saw in China, after a red 528.  The good Bimmer was in a fine shape for its years, largely original and with the original black paint still feeling smooth. The alloys are from a much newer BMW 5-Series but they looked pretty nice under the 520i.

BMW 330i Coupe Is Wrapped In Shiny Blue In China

BMW 330i Coupe

A beautiful BMW 330i Coupe, seen in front of the Workers’ Stadium in Beijing in 2012. The speedy Bimmer was wrapped in a cool shiny blue wrap, and further sexed up with darkened windows and dark gray alloy wheels. The wrap’s color almost matched with the license plate.

BMW 850ci With Black License Plate Seen In Shanghai

BMW 850ci

A BMW 850ci, seen by reader Scott in Shanghai in 2016. The pretty coupe was in a great shape and painted in white, a color rarely seen on the 8-Series. It also has an equally rare black Shanghai 沪A·05682 license plate.

BMW 850i Is A Pretty German Coupe In China

BMW 850i

A BMW 850i coupe, seen at the parking lot of my apartment building in central Beijing in 2011. The pretty Bimmer belonged to one of my neighbors, a somewhat mysterious Chinese gentlemen who owned lots of interesting cars, usually for a short time. Some were recent imports and others were bought in period. The 850i was in a reasonable shape, a bit dusty and the bonnet didn’t fully close, but overall it was fine for its age.

BMW 1M Coupe Has A Body Kit In China

BMW 1M Coupe

A BMW 1M Coupe, seen in the Lido area in Beijing. The speedy Bimmer was all dressed up, painted in black with extra wide racing wheels, matte gold alloys, and a rare ‘666’ license plate. Six is a lucky number in China. But even more impressive is the extensive body kit.

BMW E38 728iL Is Smurf Blue In China

BMW E38 728iL

A BMW 728iL sedan, seen in Beijing back in 2010. The big Bimmer was in a great shape and wrapped in a tasty smurf blue wrap. An unusual choice of color for a big BMW but the result is pretty good.

The white detailing on the mirrors, air vents, and door handles is a nice idea as well. The wrapper did a great job, it looks neat and tight, almost as if it was painted in smurf blue. The beige leather interior is a good contrast with the blue exterior.
