Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG Has A Special License Plate In China

Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG

A Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, seen in Beijing in 2016. The monster SUV has a very special license plate: 京L·92222. This sort of sequences are very rare in China and those who have ‘m do everything to keep ‘m.

Happily, these days license plates numbers are attached to persons and not to cars anymore. So even if the owner sells this Benz, he still keeps the plate and can use it on another car.  But why sell? The GL63 AMG is brilliant. Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 5.5 liter V8 engine with an output of 558 hp and 760 Nm. The engine works with a 7-speed automatic, sending horses to all wheels. It seats seven and has a 2500 kilo curb weight, yet in sprints from 0-100 in 4.9 seconds.

Somewhat badly, the Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG drinks 13 liters per 100 kilometers and that makes it an expensive drive, even in China, where petrol prices are reasonable. The high weight and big engine = high taxes, adding up to a crazy purchase price of 1.98 million yuan in 2014. It is therefore pretty rare in China, and there is only one with 京L·92222.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Is Poop Brown In China

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

China has a colorful car wrap culture. Wraps are cheap here and there are zillions of places that can do the job in no time. Over the years I have seen wraps of all color and quality. But a poop brown wrap is rare. Still, it looks rather nice on this Mercedes-Benz C-Class that I saw in Beijing in 2017.

Mercedes-Benz Advertises The S-Class In A Residential Area In China

An advertisement for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, seen in a residential compound in Beijing in 2009, showing a brown example with sporty five-spoke alloys. It is always interesting to see carmakers advertise their most expensive offerings in such a way, even in a luxury-crazy market like China. Mercedes-Benz started selling the W221 S-Class in China in 2006, initially only in S300 trim. Later on, they added the S350, S500, and S600 to the lineup. Price of the base S-Class in 2009 started at 9.93 million yuan.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class L Is Matte Black With A License In China

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

A Mercedes-Benz C-Class L sedan, seen in Beijing in 2017. The Merc’ is wrapped is a matte black wrap and further Benze’d up with darkened windows and a set of sweet sporty wheels. The wrap appears to be of a medium quality but is has been professionally applied over the mirrors and door handles, something many wrappers ‘forget’ to do. Best thing, however, is the ultra cool 京N·S3333 license plate. That’s four threes!

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class L is the long-wheelbase C sedan for the Chinese auto market. It is manufactured by the Beijing-Benz joint venture.

A Black Maybach 57 In Beijing

A fantastic Maybach 57, seen in Beijing in 2011 on a side road of the Fourth Ring Road. The long-wheelbase Maybach 62 limousine is not uncommon in China but the shorter 57 is quite rare. Whenever I see a Maybach from those days I am always surprised by how huge they actually are. Even the 57 is 5.7 meters long, 1.98meters wide and 1.5 meters tall.

The car that I met was painted in black over dark gray. At first I thought the sporty alloys where after-market but they were actually standard in China on the 2009 and 2010 model years. Power came from the mighty 6.0 twin-turbo motor, good for  640 hp and 1000 Nm. Price in 2009 started at 5.38 million yuan. The Maybach 62 started at more than double that; 12.98 million in the same year. That made the 57 look like a great deal!

In anyway, the Maybach name is still very popular. China is the largest market worldwide for the new common Benz-based Maybach line.

C126 Mercedes-Benz AMG 560SEC

An ultra rare C126 Mercedes-Benz AMG 560SEC, Spotted in China on a rainy day on a parking lot near an apartment building in central Beijing.
