This original Lancia Thema was a strange and well-loved Italian unicorn in Beijing

One of the most interesting things about life in Beijing is the unpredictability and spontaneity of the place – its honestly a city where you’ll rarely meet the same people or have the same experiences day-to-day. This also applied until fairly recently to the car-scene in the city, and what brings us to this Lancia Thema, one of the most interesting and unique cars I came across in China’s capital.

Beijing EV200 Was A Small EV Based On A Smart-Mitsubishi

A Beijing EV200 electric car, seen in a BAIC BJEV dealer in Beijing in 2016. The small EV looked nice in white, with minuscule wheels, blue detailing, and a bright red interior. Handily, the price was displayed on a display on the roof: 116.900 yuan, and after paying I could go home with that very car at that very moment. But I didn’t.

Jaguar XJ Sport V8 Is A Pretty And Sporty British Sedan

A beautiful light blue Jaguar XJ Sport V8, seen in Beijing some six years ago. The Jag’ was in very good shape but sadly missed the Jaguar hood ornament. The five spoke alloy wheels were factory standard. A strikingly pretty car yet nobody seemed to notice. And I noticed, for the first time, the odd indicator situation, with similarly shaped indicators on the front part of the bumper and on the side.

W124 Mercedes-Benz 280E With Black Plates Needs A Cleanup In China

An early W124 Mercedes-Benz 280E with black license plates, seen at a small car repair area in north Beijing in 2016, not far from where I found a Volvo 960 sedan. Volvo 960 Sedan Is Dusty In China

A very pretty yet very dusty Volvo 960 sedan, seen at a small car repair shop in north Beijing in 2016. The good Volvo was dirty and dusty with partially deflated tires, but overall in a fine shape. License plates are of Sichuan Province,  some 1800 kilometers by road. That’s like a super market run in a Volvo, is it not?
