A BMW 850ci, seen by reader Scott in Shanghai in 2016. The pretty coupe was in a great shape and painted in white, a color rarely seen on the 8-Series. It also has an equally rare black Shanghai 沪A·05682 license plate.

A BMW 850i coupe, seen at the parking lot of my apartment building in central Beijing in 2011. The pretty Bimmer belonged to one of my neighbors, a somewhat mysterious Chinese gentlemen who owned lots of interesting cars, usually for a short time. Some were recent imports and others were bought in period. The 850i was in a reasonable shape, a bit dusty and the bonnet didn’t fully close, but overall it was fine for its age.

A W140 Mercedes-Benz S600 sedan, seen in Hebei Province in China in December 2019. It was cold and there was snow, but the big Merc’ made me feel warm again. The big German machine was painted in black with shiny gold details, suspension was lowered and it stood on extra wide wheels with gold-black BBS alloys. A sweet Beijing Auto BJ40 F40, seen on a cold winter’s day in January 2020 in Beijing. The Beijing Auto BJ40 F40 launched in 2019 as a sporty and cool variant of the 3-door version of the BJ40 SUV.
The name was a tad confusing so Beijing has since re-launched it as a stand-alone model, simply called the Beijing Auto F40. It received a facelift in late 2020. The car I saw is a rare early model with the original messy name.

A massive Lincoln MKT, seen in Beijing in 2019, painted in a dark shade of black with gray multi spoke alloys. The Lincoln MKT has always been an interesting and somewhat odd car, mixing elements of a wagon and an SUV. It shares much of its underpinnings with the similarly interesting Ford Flex.

A white Roewe W5, seen in a cold winter’s day in south Beijing. The W5 was a mid-size luxury SUV that was produced between 2011 and 2017, with a facelift in 2014. Our W5 is an original pre-facelift car. The good Roewe was in a fine shape, painted in white with the plastics intact and fitted with the factory wheels.
